GRADING
A soft landing is not
always a good landing.
Every certified landing is graded out of five on the whole approach, not just the rate on touchdown. Float a thousand metres down the runway at 80 fpm and the grade says so. Open any landing and read exactly how each mark was earned, in plain pilot language, with the measured numbers behind it.
Approach stability
25%How steady the descent rate and the speed were from the stabilised approach gate down to the flare.
Touchdown zone
25%Where the wheels touched against the aiming point and the marked zone, which scale with the runway exactly as the paint does.
Centerline tracking
15%How closely you held the extended centerline. The bands come from instrument landing system geometry.
Flare and touchdown control
15%Whether the flare arrested the descent, or you floated down the runway hunting a soft one.
Alignment at touchdown
10%How straight the aircraft pointed down the runway. A few degrees of crab in a crosswind is technique, not an error.
Touchdown attitude
10%Pitch and bank at the moment of contact. Banking into the wind is correct, and graded as such.
Graded per aircraft class, so a Cessna is never marked against an airliner. Flights with slew, a crash, a replay or autoland do not count.
